Revelation’s Seven Seals (part 6)

The Sixth Seal — The Great Signs: Earthquake, Darkened Sun, Blood Moon, and Falling Stars

When the sixth seal opens, the focus shifts to the great signs that announce the nearness of the end.

“I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth… Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.” (Revelation 6:12–14).

The signs are stated plainly: earthquake, sun, moon, and stars. Heaven and earth are shaken. The created order itself becomes a witness.

Revelation’s language echoes Christ’s own words about the end:

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven… Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven… and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Matthew 24:29–30).

Notice the order. The signs come after tribulation. That detail matters. The fifth seal portrayed centuries of suffering and the cry of “How long?” The sixth seal reveals the divine response: unmistakable signs that history is moving toward its climax.

These signs are not random disasters. They are signals. They are warnings. They are merciful interruptions meant to awaken a sleeping world.

But the seal does not only describe cosmic disturbance. It reveals the response of humanity.

“And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!’” (Revelation 6:15–16).

No class is exempt. Kings and servants alike tremble. Wealth offers no refuge. Power provides no protection. When the reality of God’s judgment breaks upon the conscience, the distinctions of earth disappear.

Throughout Revelation, it is the Father who sits upon the throne. Here the throne is revealed as a judgment throne. The Lamb, once slain and now exalted is present, and His wrath is named. This is not yet the visible return of Revelation 19, where Christ rides forth on a white horse. Rather, it is the moment when the world recognizes that judgment is real, that heaven is not indifferent, and that accountability cannot be escaped.

The chapter closes with a piercing question:

“For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?” (Revelation 6:17).

That question ends Revelation 6—but it does not yet open the seventh seal. The seventh seal does not appear until Revelation 8:1. Between the question and its resolution stands Revelation 7, which plainly answers the question, who can stand?

The sixth seal does not end with comfort for the unrepentant. It ends with urgency. The question forces a decision. Not everyone will be ready. Not everyone will be prepared. But Revelation does not leave the faithful in suspense. The next chapter will show that those who are sealed, those clothed in Christ’s righteousness, are able to stand.

The sixth seal reminds us that the end does not arrive without warning. God gives signs. God gives time. God calls the world to see. The increasing instability of our world is not merely political or environmental—it is prophetic. It is a call to wakefulness.

The question of the sixth seal is not theoretical—it is personal. Who is able to stand? The answer is not found in status, strength, or self-confidence. It is found in surrender. The only ones who will stand in that day are those who stand with the Lamb now. The signs are not given to frighten us into panic, but to lead us into preparation. Christ has not hidden the future; He has revealed it so that we might be ready. The appeal of the sixth seal is clear: do not hide from the face of God then—seek His face now. Stand with Christ today, so that when heaven is opened, you will not tremble in fear, but lift up your head in hope.
