Nearly 70 attendees from across the Michigan Conference gathered at Camp Au Sable on May 8–10 for the Mini-Medical Missionary Training Retreat., also known as EM3 training, which stands for “Every Member a Medical Missionary.”
The weekend focused on equipping church members with foundational principles of health ministry and practical ways to serve others through simple natural remedies and Christ-centered medical missionary work. Participants received both spiritual encouragement and hands-on instruction designed to help them minister more effectively in their homes, churches, and communities.
The retreat combined worship, inspiration, practical training, and fellowship in the peaceful setting of Camp Au Sable. Attendees represented a wide variety of churches from around the Conference, united by a desire to learn how health ministry can open doors for sharing the love of Christ.
Scott Michael Bennett and family provided music throughout the weekend, blessing attendees with a Friday evening concert, personal testimony, and vocal praise during multiple sessions. Their ministry helped set a spiritual tone that emphasized both healing and hope.
Jonathan Sharley, MD, served as one of the featured speakers for the retreat, presenting inspirational messages titled “Divine Design & Solid Science” and “Jesus – the Ultimate Medical Missionary.” His presentations explored the connection between Biblical principles, health, and Christ’s example of compassionate ministry to others.
Practical instruction formed a major part of the training experience. Staci Schefka and Melanie Quion, MS RN, led a natural home remedy series along with interactive labs where participants learned simple, accessible health practices that can be used in everyday ministry settings.
Attendees received instruction in the use of poultices, basic massage techniques, and hydrotherapy applications such as contrast showers, foot baths, neck wraps, and ice massage. These practical demonstrations gave participants opportunities not only to learn the techniques, but also to practice them in a supportive environment.
The EM3 training emphasized that medical missionary work is not reserved for healthcare professionals alone. Rather, it is a ministry every church member can participate in by caring for physical, emotional, and spiritual needs in their communities.
Organizers shared that the retreat was designed to inspire members to follow Christ’s model of ministry by combining practical care with spiritual compassion. Through simple acts of service, health ministry can become a meaningful bridge for building relationships and sharing the gospel.
For those unable to attend the May retreat, another opportunity for EM3 training will be offered during Michigan Camp Meeting. Additional details regarding times and locations are expected to be announced soon.
As attendees returned home, many left encouraged and better equipped to serve others in practical ways, continuing the mission of bringing healing, hope, and Christ-centered compassion to their local communities.
