50 Years of Faith: Detroit Korean Church

Detroit Korean Church Celebrates 50 Years of Faith and Mission

The Detroit Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church recently celebrated a significant milestone—50 years of faith, service, and mission to the Korean community and the greater Detroit area. Approximately 100 people, including both church members and guests, gathered for the anniversary service to offer thanks for God’s guidance and blessings on the Detroit Korean church.

Founded in 1975 as a small, self-supporting ministry, the church soon organized as a united congregation later that same year. What began with a small group of believers has grown into a lasting legacy of gospel ministry that has now spanned half a century.

After several years of searching for a permanent place of worship, the congregation established its first sanctuary in 1981, followed by its move to the Livonia church building in August of 1983. During those formative years, members not only dedicated church facilities but committed themselves fully to service, evangelism, and community outreach.

In the decades that followed, the church experienced continued growth and expanding ministry. Through strong spiritual leadership and a clear mission focus, the Detroit Korean church played an important role in the planting of additional Korean congregations, including churches in Ann Arbor and Troy.

Health outreach initiatives also became a key part of the church’s ministry, positioning the congregation as a center of healing and community engagement. Through these efforts, church members sought to meet both physical and spiritual needs while building meaningful relationships throughout the surrounding neighborhoods.

Today, following a season of restoration and renovation, the church is entering a new chapter of ministry. The congregation now reflects a multigenerational, multilingual, and cross-cultural community, uniting Korean- and English-speaking members under a shared commitment to Christ and the mission of the church.

A Celebration Marked by Gratitude and Praise

The anniversary program featured multiple guest speakers who have served the Detroit Korean church over the years. Pastor Bong-ho Kim, the church’s second senior pastor, served as the main speaker, while Pastor Wan-joo Yang, the church’s third senior pastor, delivered the afternoon message. Both pastors attended in person to give thanks for God’s providence and grace that have guided the congregation throughout its history.

A special song of praise echoed throughout the celebration as every generation—from elders and youth to children—prepared musical offerings of gratitude, expressing their devotion, thanks, and hope in God.

A particularly meaningful moment came when Chang-sook Jung, a deaconess and the only remaining founding member of the church, offered a special prayer of thanksgiving during the service, reflecting on God’s faithfulness from the earliest days of the congregation to the present.

The program also included a slideshow highlighting key moments from the past 50 years, reminding attendees of God’s sustaining grace through every season of the church’s journey. In addition, video congratulatory messages were shared from former pastors, as well as from the presidents of the Michigan Conference and the Korean Association of Seventh-day Adventist Churches in North America, offering words of encouragement and affirmation for the congregation’s continued mission.

Looking Forward in Mission

While the anniversary celebration honored the past, church leaders emphasized a continued focus on the future. With renewed facilities and a growing, diverse membership, the Detroit Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church remains committed to expanding its outreach and serving as a beacon of hope in the community.

As members reflected on God’s guidance over five decades, many expressed confidence that the same God who has led them thus far will continue to guide the church in fulfilling its mission until Christ’s return.
